The finest walking routes in the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse
The Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse is a paradise for hikers. From Domaine de Donstiennes, set out to discover rolling landscapes, deep forests and picturesque villages. Whether you are looking for a 5 km family stroll or a 20 km trek through the Beaumont woods, the region offers waymarked trails for all levels.
GR 12 — Amsterdam–Paris Trail
The famous long-distance trail crosses the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse. From Donstiennes, join the GR 12 to hike through the Sambre valley towards Thuin or head south towards Chimay.
GR 125 — Tour of the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse
This 200 km trail loops around the entire region. Walk a section to discover the most typical landscapes: hedgerow meadows, wooded ridges and deep valleys.
Local loops around Donstiennes
Several waymarked circuits start directly from the village. The Donstiennes loop (5.5 km) winds between fields and forest edges — perfect for a morning or family walk.
Trail to Abbaye d'Aulne
An 11 km route links Donstiennes to the majestic ruins of Abbaye d'Aulne. The hike crosses the countryside of Leers-et-Fosteau before descending into the Sambre valley.
Varied landscapes at every step
The geography of the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse offers a rare diversity of landscapes over short distances. Leaving Donstiennes, you will cross the rolling meadows typical of the Walloon bocage before entering the forest massifs of Beaumont and Rance. Sunken lanes lined with centuries-old hedgerows alternate with open plateaux offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The trail network is maintained by local tourist offices and the GR Sentiers de Grande Randonnée. Waymarks are clear and frequent, even on secondary paths. In spring, the undergrowth is carpeted with wild bluebells; in autumn, the forests put on a spectacular display of colour among beech, oak and hornbeam trees.
The RAVeL: greenways accessible to all
Former railway lines converted into greenways (RAVeL) are ideal for walkers who prefer flat, safe paths. The RAVeL line L109 follows the Sambre between Thuin and Lobbes, offering a bucolic route along the river. These paths are accessible to pushchairs and people with reduced mobility. From the estate, you can reach the RAVeL in 20 minutes on foot and enjoy a peaceful walk along the Sambre, with the option of stopping at Abbaye d'Aulne for a visit or a drink at the brewery.
Practical tips for your hike
The trails of the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse are walkable year-round, but the best seasons are spring (April–June) for wildflowers and autumn (September–November) for the colours. In winter, some forest paths can be muddy — bring waterproof hiking boots. For detailed maps, pick up the 1:25,000 IGN map covering Beaumont-Thuin, available at local tourist offices. The Komoot and AllTrails apps also list many circuits in the region. Remember to close any pasture gates you pass through — the local farmers' livestock will thank you.
